Primary PE

Well, the secret is out - I don't like brussel sprouts!
It's true, I don't.
I do like chocolate and chips, but only sometimes!

During Primary PE in the past couple of weeks, we have been discussing 'Healthy Living' and what it means?

One of the criteria for PE (or HPE as it is known in the Secondary school) from Prep to Grade six is:

"Understands elements of a healthy lifestyle"

The language changes for Secondary, but the basic concept is the same:

"Demonstrates knowledge and an understanding of factors that promote a healthy lifestyle"

Our wonderful Primary staff have been doing some great work around this concept with our "Crunch and Sip" and "Snack Attack" programs. It was also decided to spend some time focussing on these topics during PE time, as it is not generally a practically assessed criteria, but is an important part of our curriculum.

So...

Who likes apples?
Who has some grapes in their lunch box today?
What did you have for breakfast this morning?
Who forgot to bring their drink bottle to school? Make sure you have a few drinks of water please.

...And many more questions were posed to our students and some great engaging discussion was happening in every class.

Some BIG concept ideas that were discussed were:

  • How important is drinking water for our bodies?
  • Food is fuel
  • Sometimes foods - yes it's ok to have treats - don't panic!
  • The importance of breakfast
  • We all have 'good' days and 'bad' days

We talked about Easter and Christmas and Birthday parties and all of the yummy food available at these times too!

Hopefully, this has started some positive conversations amongst our students and with families

I've found over the past couple of years the Nutrition Australia website to be very useful both personally and professionally. Have a look and see what you think.

Did you know there is now a NEW Healthy Eating Pyramid? (It's on the homepage) Picture below.

These two sites have great information also:
